NEW YORK (Reuters) – A grand jury in New York is hearing evidence against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-professed mastermind of the September 11 attacks in 2001, and four accused accomplices, NBC News reported Tuesday.
A grand jury decides whether the evidence presented is strong enough to bring charges.
Mohammed, a Pakistani raised in Kuwait, and the other four men are due to be tried in federal court in Manhattan, just blocks from the site of the destroyed World Trade Center.
The case is part of the Obama administration's strategy of trying accused militants in U.S. civilian courts.
The five men are being held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
